SPECIAL GUESTS
Dr. Raquel Sàenz Ortiz - Assistant Professor of Education at Southwestern University
Dr. Raquel Sáenz Ortiz is an Assistant Professor of Education at Southwestern University. She began her teaching career as a 6th grade Social Studies teacher in South Texas, across the border from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, where her father was raised. Over the past decade, Raquel taught in a dual language elementary school in Nicaragua and an alternative high school in Boston. While teaching in Boston, Raquel became immersed in organizing efforts for Ethnic Studies and was part of a collective of educators designing Ethnic Studies curriculum for Boston Public Schools. Raquel's research focuses on culturally sustaining pedagogies for immigrant origin youth in the U.S. and Western Europe.
Ms. Karalei Nunn - Founder and CEO of Meridian School
In the mid-2000s, Karalei Nunn, led a small group of parents seeking a better educational future for their children to create Meridian, a K-12 International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. Awarded a charter from the state of Texas, Meridian opened its doors in 2011 with 680 K-8 students. In her role of Chief Operating Officer, she facilitated the growth to more than 1700 students in grades K-12. Ranked the #1 high school in 2018, Meridian has graduated almost 600 students since that first graduation in 2016 with the majority having earned the prestigious IB Diploma.
Meridian is proud to foster one of the largest Model UN programs for middle and high school students in Texas and honors its former students who have established SICMUN as an international conference for students from the Americas. Having assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer in 2022, Ms. Nunn is very pleased to see Meridian alumni living out Meridian’s vision- to be good citizens who can artfully navigate our complex world and enjoy a good life with others.
